Tshirt chart sneak peek
February 21st, 2009 by Steven Milne
A bit of clever PR was perpetrated on the Tshirt buying public over the past few weeks, so how did our chart react?.
One of the more controversial tshirt sites announced that it was closing down. This got a lot of coverage, from a number of angles. Political correctness gone mad, credit crunch kills another business, rush and buy a shirt now.The tshirt blogging community was alight - tshirt hell was a well known brand and it was closing. Who next?
Then they announced just a few days ago that it was a hoax, and a very successful one at that. The site wasn’t closing down, it was all a marketing ploy. Twitter, and the blogs, got pretty excited about this.
So how did the t-shirt chart we create for a leading tshirt blog reflect this?
Before the initial announcement t-shirt hell appeared at #46 on the December chart. In January they leapt to #3 on the initial close news. The full chart for February isn’t due until the end of the month - but here is a sneak peak from yesterday - just as the impact of the coverage of the hoax news was taking hold.
It looks like this will be a rare case of a PR stunt (or sophisticated marketing campaign if you prefer) achieving multiple months in the top 5 of the chart. The second wave of coverage hitting at exactly the right point as initial benefits were starting to wane.
Whatever you think of the strategy - out charts show that it has been amazingly effective in achieving coverage.
